Living at Sunrise

A physical assessment is completed at entry into the community and periodically throughout your stay to ensure your care plan always reflects your needs.

Assisted Living

Assisted living is for seniors who can no longer live independently at home yet don't need 24-hour, complex medical care. It's an affordable, residential alternative to traditional institutional care — offering personal assistance, supportive services, and healthcare in a professionally managed, carefully designed residential environment.

Our Approach

Unlike traditional long-term care, assisted living at Sunrise emphasizes dignity, autonomy, and privacy. It takes care of the body, but also the mind, heart, and soul. Residents can make their own choices and receive personalized services through an Individualized Care Plan — it's their life and their home.

Family Meetings

We conduct a family meeting every six months with the resident and their family to review the Individual Service Plan and address any questions about billing or care.

Cost

Costs are generally less than skilled nursing homes and home health care and vary according to suite type and level of services needed. Sunrise requires no long-term lease or endowment — one monthly fee covers just about everything.

Tax Deductibility

Assisted Living is Often Tax Deductible

In most cases, much of the cost of assisted living is tax deductible to the resident or to a family member if the resident qualifies as a dependent. Under the Kennedy-Kassebaum Act of 1996, a portion of care costs may be deductible if the individual is unable to perform at least two activities of daily living (such as eating, bathing, or dressing) or suffers from severe cognitive impairment.

Services must be part of a care plan prescribed by a licensed healthcare practitioner. Consult a tax advisor for guidance specific to your situation.

Reminiscence Program

Alzheimer's is a progressive, degenerative brain disease that results in impaired memory, thinking, and behavior. Sunrise has created an innovative and effective care solution — our Reminiscence Program.

A Home Within a Home

The Reminiscence neighborhood is a separate, safe, secure area of the community dedicated to residents with Alzheimer's disease or other memory-related impairments. Its features include:

  • Surroundings designed to look and feel like home
  • Safe wandering paths
  • Memory boxes filled with personalized items
  • Graduated dressing bars in armoires
  • Soothing décor, scents, and sounds
  • Hydration and nutrition programs
  • Safe outdoor activity areas
  • Life Skill centers and Reminiscence kits (gardening, sewing, infant care, office work, household chores)
  • Staff trained in Sunrise's Five Star Training Program

The program has been developed in accordance with the Alzheimer's Association's Guidelines for Dignity and enhanced over the years with best practices from around the world.

Family Involvement

An active volunteer program encourages family involvement. Regular support group meetings and family gatherings address the needs of family members.

Cost

Reminiscence Neighborhoods generally cost less than traditional long-term care. No long-term lease or endowment is required — one monthly fee covers just about everything, including all assisted living services plus individualized personal care with specialized activities, enhanced dining, sensory garden areas, porches, a secure verandah for outdoor enjoyment, and walking paths.

Respite & Hospice Care

Sunrise offers a respite care program that provides our services to short-term residents who require help after surgery, during an illness, or when family members are away or need a short break.

Respectful hospice care for terminally ill residents is also offered at many locations.
